Last year the summary-electoral conference of the Vilnius Jewish Community (VJC) took place in two stages, because of community statutes which had to be conformed to a recently passed Parliamentary Law on Associations. Community members were given a month to familiarize themselves with the proposed changes prior to approval of the new laws; only then could they continue their conference, confirm their new statutes, and elect their community leaders.
The Vilnius Jewish Community conference which took place at the Tolerance Center on May 15 heard a report by chairman Prof. Dr. Adolfas Bolotinas.
It was decided: - to confirm representatives to the 7th Lithuanian Jewish Community summary-electoral conference; - to empower the conference-elected commission to prepare new VJC statutes and to present them for confirmation at the conference. The first conference was ended at that point, with the announcement of an adjournment in its work.
The date for stage two of the conference was announced in the press a month prior to said date, and proposals for the statutes were published over the internet. Every community member could also get a copy of the proposed statutes at the LJC.
The conclusion (stage 2) of the Vilnius Jewish Community summary-electoral conference was held at the Vilnius Teachers' Center on Dec. 18. Chairperson of the working commission, advocate Faina Kukliansky, gave a presentation on the proposed new VJC statutes, which were confirmed by the summary-electoral conference. Election of governing bodies was based on said confirmed statutes. Dr. Simonas Alperavi¨ius was elected chairman of the Vilnius Jewish Community, executive members: Simonas Gurevi¨ius, Aleksandras Markas, Vulfas Gurvičius, Simonas Fainbergas, Maàa Grodnikienė, Michailas Rosicianas, Junona Berznitski, žana Skudovičienė, Borisas Olšanickis.
A recommendation made during discussions on the proposed statutes to unite the Lithuanian Jewish Community and the Vilnius Jewish Community into one organization was passed by a majority vote. The conference empowered the newly elected VJC leaders to carry out the necessary legal procedures uniting the two communities into one organization.
