We dedicate a lot of energy and effort to the perpetuation of the memory of Holocaust victims. September 23, declared in Lithuania as the Day of the Genocide of Jews, is always solemnly marked at the IXth Fort in Kaunas and Paneriai — the most horrible sights of mass murders of Jews. Over 200 places of mass extermination, scattered all over Lithuania, have been put in order. Anniversaries of terrible Actions are remembered. The feats and the memory of the ghetto partisans are honored. A lot in this respect has been accomplished by the Jewish Gaon State Museum, founded in 1989. The Museum has opened a permanent exhibition on Holocaust. There is a section of the Museum in Paneriai. Various expositions are regularly organized by Museum's staff, such as an impressive exhibition The Jews of Lithuania in the Fight against Nazism, dedicated to the 55th anniversary of the Victory in WWII. The Museum published quite a few books on the topic of Holocaust, among them the list of the Vilnius ghetto prisoners. Recently, especially after the Stockholm Forum, the Government also made some substantial steps toward the Holocaust education. A wide range program concerning this issue has been prepared by a special Governmental Commission. |
