At the night of June 23 the Vilnius Jewish Cemetery was desecrated. The vandals demolished twenty two tombstones, ruined flower beds on some of the graves. The Jewish Community of Lithuania expressed their gratitude to the President of Lithuania, the Mayor of the capital, foreign embassies, all the righteous, who gave voice to their indignation to the actions of vandals and sympathy to the Jews of Lithuania. However, the vandals, who destroyed the graves, are not yet found. Extending the support to the Jews of Lithuania regarding the crudity of vandals, the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, the representatives of government and municipality of the city of Vilnius as well as other officials in their declarations expressed the hope that the offenders will soon be found and punished. In the letter of the Jewish Community it is stressed that with the efforts of the municipality of the city of Vilnius the territory of the Jewish cemetery was set in order, all the gravestones were immediately restored.
